T
hroughout my childhood I enjoyed setting up my parents slide projector and flipping through photographs.
After all, it's pretty cool to see pictures of your parents and old stuff from before you were born, right? What about all those
silly hairstyles and funky clothes the 80's and 90s brought to us? Yeah, I may be guilty of a few of those also but we won't talk about that.
W
hen I was a teenager 35mm SLR cameras were cool but they were also big, intimidating, sophisticated, expensive and kind of geeky. My dad had one
and I might have taken a picture or two with it but he had also tweaked all the settings so I just had to push the shutter button. Seemed kind of complicated
to get the same result I was getting with my point and shoot camera. On top of that, there was no instant gratification with film cameras. You might of
taken three rolls of film and have nothing to show for it until you went to the store, crossed your fingers and hoped there were a few
that turned out perfectly. Sure, you could of had your own dark room but I wasn't into that geeky photoclub stuff.
I
n 2001 I went on a backpacking trip to Europe and like most people, I wanted great pictures so I bought my first digital point-and-shoot camera.
My requirements were pretty simple; it had to take reasonably nice pictures, work on AA batteries and fit in my pocket.
Zoom and other features were also cool but not nearly as important. My trip was a lot of fun and memorable, there was certainly no
shortage of things to take pictures of there. When I returned, I even photoshopped a couple and tweaked a few things.
O
ver the years, my point and shoot camera developed signs of aging and I had exceeded it's technical photographic capabilities. As I explored
new options dSLR's were suddenly within reach but it wasn't until I discovered photoblogs
that I developed a real itch for one.
A
s a result of this whitebalance was born. I am still fairly new to more advanced photography techniques so you can expect a wide variety of
pictures and techniques featured on this site. To me whitebalance is a tool to discover, share, explore, criticize (creatively of course) and
inspire others through my photographs. Many photograhps featured on whitebalance were taken in and around Canada's National Capital Region, Ottawa.
T
hanks for taking the time to read this and I hope that you enjoy what I have to share through my photographs.
